Cannabis & Menopause

Medical marijuana is used to address many symptoms of many ailments in women's health. It is typically not a cure, but supplementation can definitely aid in easing the uncomfortable symptoms. When it comes to menopause, sadly, there are no human studies of the effects of cannabinoids and cannabis. That being said, many women successfully use cannabis to treat the endocannabinoid-related dysregulation occurring throughout menopause.



Menopause, whether naturally occurring or medically induced, can cause a range of unpleasant symptoms including mood swings, fluctuations in libido, hot flashes and temperature dysregulation, night sweats, unwanted hair growth, insomnia, osteoporosis, and vaginal dryness. Although certain strains may not target menopause directly, many women utilize cannabis to treat the many different menopausal symptoms.


The endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating the neurological and endocrine system changes that occur with menopause. It also aids in maintaining bone mass which may reduce bone loss.


Dosing varies from person to person but it is more effective to have small spaced doses to maintain the appropriate level that is effective for each individual. Small spaced dosing is, therefore, advised over one large dose.


Low dose tinctures or sublingual cannabis are effective and convenient. For hot flashes, 2.5 to 4mg of THC is recommended. For night sweats and insomnia, 5mg of oral (edibles) at night before bed is recommended.


Even with the negative effects of recent vapes, there are safer options available. Vaporization remains a viable option for many patients in relieving many ailments.


High potency CBD topicals are effective in slowing the growth of, and ridding unwanted body hair sometimes accompanying menopause.



Talk to your provider or local dispensary about different strains that may aid in relieving your specific ailments of menopause. Certain strains will be more effective for certain pains and inflammation. Different strains may be recommended depending on time of day as well.
